What is toenail fungus?
Toenail fungus is a fungal infection (usually dermatophytes, yeasts, or molds) that invades the nail plate, nail bed, or surrounding skin. It commonly causes yellowing or whitening of the nail, thickening, crumbling at the edges, and sometimes odor or mild pain. The infection can be persistent because the nail acts as a protective barrier for the fungus.
What causes toe nail fungus?
- Warm, moist environments: prolonged exposure to sweaty shoes or public wet areas (pools, locker rooms).
- Poor foot hygiene: infrequent nail care or not drying feet properly.
- Nail trauma: repeated injury or tight shoes that damage the nail and allow fungi to enter.
- Immune or circulatory issues: diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or weakened immunity increase risk.
- Prior fungal infections: athlete’s foot or previous nail fungus that spreads to other nails.
Treatments & Recommendations
Before your ClearLift treatment, our skilled provider will thoroughly cleanse your skin and ensure that you are comfortable. They will then use the handheld laser device to target specific areas of concern on your face or body. During the treatment, you may feel a warm sensation as the laser penetrates the deeper layers of your skin. This is a normal sensation and should not cause discomfort. After the treatment, you may experience some mild redness or swelling in the treated area, but this should subside within a few hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a laser treatment painful?
Most patients report a mild warming or tingling sensation during treatment. Pain is generally minimal; topical numbing is rarely needed.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically 2–4 sessions spaced 2–6 weeks apart, though severe cases may need more. Your provider will recommend a plan based on nail thickness and infection extent.
When will my nail look normal again?
Cosmetic improvement is gradual as the infected portion grows out. Expect visible improvement in 3–6 months for toenails; full regrowth can take 9–12 months.
Are results permanent?
Laser can clear fungal infection, but recurrence is possible without preventive measures. Touch-up sessions and good foot hygiene reduce recurrence risk.
